Yacht Charter Porto Rotondo

Porto Rotondo is the quieter, more refined neighbour of Porto Cervo on the Costa Smeralda — and an increasingly popular base for yacht charter in northeast Sardinia. The village sits on a sheltered inlet between Olbia and Porto Cervo, with a well-maintained marina, excellent restaurants, and direct access to both the Costa Smeralda's famous bays and the dramatic island of Tavolara. For guests who want the Costa Smeralda experience without the Porto Cervo price tag and crowds, Porto Rotondo is the smart choice.

about

About Porto Rotondo

Porto Rotondo was developed in the 1960s — the same era as Porto Cervo — by the Donà dalle Rose family from Venice. While Porto Cervo became the Aga Khan's glamour project, Porto Rotondo evolved into a more understated, residential destination favoured by Italian industrialists and families who wanted the Costa Smeralda lifestyle without the spectacle. The village has a distinctive Venetian-influenced architecture, a small amphitheatre overlooking the sea, and a piazzetta lined with restaurants and boutiques that are busy but never overwhelming.

For yacht charter, Porto Rotondo's position is excellent. It sits roughly halfway between Olbia (15 minutes south) and Porto Cervo (20 minutes north), which means you have direct access to three distinct sailing areas: the Costa Smeralda bays to the north (Cala di Volpe, Romazzino, Mortorio), the dramatic island of Tavolara to the southeast (one of the best day sails in Sardinia), and the La Maddalena Archipelago within easy reach for a day or week charter.

The marina at Porto Rotondo accommodates yachts up to 60 metres, with full services including fuel, water, electricity, and a small chandlery. Marina fees are notably lower than Porto Cervo — roughly 30–40% less for an equivalent berth — which makes Porto Rotondo an attractive base for weekly yacht charters where marina costs accumulate over several nights.

day charters

Day Charters from Porto Rotondo

Porto Rotondo to Tavolara (southeast, 8–10nm): One of the best day sails in Sardinia. Tavolara is a 560-metre limestone monolith rising straight from the sea — visible from Porto Rotondo on a clear day. The western anchorage has exceptional snorkelling over rocky seabed with grouper, octopus, and bream. A tiny beach restaurant (King of Tavolara) serves fresh fish on the sand. The Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo marine reserve protects the surrounding waters. This day charter is unique to Porto Rotondo — too far south for boats departing from Porto Cervo or Cannigione.

Porto Rotondo to Costa Smeralda bays (north, 5–12nm): Head north along the coast to Cala di Volpe, Romazzino, Liscia Ruja, and Mortorio island. The same famous bays that Porto Cervo day charters visit, but approached from the south — which means less crowded arrival times (you reach Cala di Volpe from the quieter end while Porto Cervo boats arrive from the north). A full-day charter covers 3–4 bays with swim stops and lunch.

Porto Rotondo to Molara and Molarotto (east, 6–8nm): Two smaller islands southeast of Tavolara. Molara has sheltered anchorages and excellent snorkelling. Molarotto is a dramatic granite islet that is a protected nesting site — you cannot land, but anchoring nearby and swimming is permitted. A quieter alternative to the Costa Smeralda bays.

Sunset charter (3–4 hours): An evening departure from Porto Rotondo heading toward Capo Figari or along the coast toward Cala di Volpe. Swim stop, aperitivo aboard, sunset over the Sardinian mountains. €400–€1,000.

week charters

Week Charters from Porto Rotondo

Porto Rotondo is well-positioned for weekly yacht charters. The nearby Portisco marina (10 minutes north by road, or 3nm by sea) is one of the main charter fleet bases in Sardinia, and many charter companies offer pickup from Porto Rotondo itself or transfer between Porto Rotondo hotels and Portisco.

The Classic Week (Porto Rotondo → Maddalena → Corsica → Costa Smeralda → Porto Rotondo): Day 1: North along the Costa Smeralda to Baia Sardinia. Day 2–3: La Maddalena Archipelago — Spargi, Budelli, Caprera. Day 4: Cross to Bonifacio, Corsica. Day 5: Lavezzi Islands, then south to Porto Cervo. Day 6: Cala di Volpe, Mortorio, return to Porto Rotondo. 65–85nm total. See our itinerary guide.

South-Focused Week (Porto Rotondo → Tavolara → San Teodoro → Porto Rotondo): A less common but beautiful itinerary heading south from Porto Rotondo. Tavolara, Molara, the coast down to San Teodoro and Budoni, then returning north via the offshore islands. Quieter, fewer yachts, spectacular scenery. Best for guests who have already done the Maddalena/Costa Smeralda route and want something different.

Combined North + South (7–10 days): For guests with more time, Porto Rotondo's central position makes it the ideal base for a longer charter that covers both the Maddalena Archipelago to the north and Tavolara/San Teodoro to the south — the full breadth of northeast Sardinia's coast.

fleet

Yachts Available from Porto Rotondo

The main charter fleets in the area are based at Portisco (3nm north of Porto Rotondo) and Cannigione (12nm north). Both bases offer pickup transfer from Porto Rotondo. Some charter companies also base individual yachts at Porto Rotondo marina directly.

RIBs (7–12m) — the most popular day charter vessel from Porto Rotondo. Fast enough for the Tavolara day trip (16–20nm round trip) and nimble enough for Costa Smeralda bay-hopping. With skipper, from €600/day.

Motor yachts (40–80ft) — comfort and speed for day or week charters. The sail from Porto Rotondo to Porto Cervo (12nm) takes about 40 minutes on a motor yacht, making it easy to combine the two ports. Crewed motor yachts with captain and chef available.

Catamarans (40–50ft) — available from Portisco for week charters. The catamaran's shallow draft is ideal for the sandy anchorages around Tavolara. Most catamaran charters from Portisco include Porto Rotondo as a first or last night stop.

Sailing yachts (36–50ft) — available from Portisco and Cannigione. The sail from Porto Rotondo south to Tavolara offers excellent Mistral-powered reaching in the afternoon — one of the most enjoyable afternoon sails on the northeast coast.

vs porto cervo

Porto Rotondo vs Porto Cervo

Guests often ask whether to base their yacht charter in Porto Rotondo or Porto Cervo. The two are only 20 minutes apart by road (12nm by sea), so you can easily visit both during any charter. The question is where to start.

Choose Porto Rotondo if: You prefer a quieter, more residential atmosphere. You want lower marina fees (30–40% less than Porto Cervo). You plan to include Tavolara in your itinerary (much closer from Porto Rotondo). You are staying at a hotel in the Porto Rotondo area. You want excellent restaurants without the Porto Cervo markup.

Choose Porto Cervo if: You want the full Costa Smeralda glamour — the YCCS, the piazzetta, the nightlife, the superyacht marina. You are chartering a luxury motor yacht (Porto Cervo's marina infrastructure is better for large vessels). You want to be as close as possible to the famous Costa Smeralda bays (Cala di Volpe is 4nm from Porto Cervo, 10nm from Porto Rotondo).

In practice, many week charters start from Portisco (between the two) and visit both Porto Rotondo and Porto Cervo during the week. For day charters, Porto Rotondo is the better base for Tavolara; Porto Cervo is better for the Costa Smeralda bays.

dining

Dining & Life Ashore in Porto Rotondo

Porto Rotondo has a concentrated cluster of excellent restaurants around the piazzetta and marina. Ristorante Maricò is a local favourite for fresh seafood — less formal than Porto Cervo restaurants, better value, and arguably better fish. S'Andira on the marina serves creative Sardinian cuisine with a modern twist. For pizza, Da Giovanni is a reliable local institution.

The village itself is compact and walkable — marina, piazzetta, amphitheatre, beach, and restaurants are all within a five-minute stroll. The atmosphere is lively but not chaotic, making it particularly pleasant for families and couples who enjoy eating out without the reservations-weeks-in-advance pressure of Porto Cervo.

The nearest beach to Porto Rotondo is Spiaggia dei Sassi (a five-minute walk from the marina), a mix of sand and smooth granite. For a full beach day, Spiaggia del Principe (15 minutes by car or 4nm by boat) is one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia — fine white sand, shallow turquoise water, and a beach bar with sunloungers.

Porto Rotondo is 15 minutes from Olbia Airport, making it one of the most convenient bases in Sardinia for a yacht charter. You can land at midday and be aboard your charter yacht or sitting at a waterfront restaurant in Porto Rotondo by 13:00.
