Overview
The most fun way to see Sardinia in a single day.
A RIB — rigid inflatable boat — is one of the most popular charter formats in Sardinia, especially for day trips. Where larger yachts offer living space and multi-day comfort, a RIB offers something different: speed, agility and the ability to reach places that other boats simply cannot access. Shallow turquoise coves, narrow inlets, tiny beach landings and protected rock pools — a RIB puts you in the heart of Sardinia's coastal beauty with almost no friction.
In practical terms, RIBs are also often the most affordable and spontaneous charter option. They suit guests who want a brilliant day on the water without committing to a multi-day trip, guests who are staying at a hotel or villa and want to add a memorable coastal experience, and travellers who simply want to cover more ground in a single day than any other boat type allows.
The best RIB trips in Sardinia tend to focus on the areas with the highest density of beautiful bays within short range: the La Maddalena archipelago, the Costa Smeralda coast and the coves of South Sardinia.
Why choose a RIB
Speed, access and spontaneity.
RIBs solve a specific problem beautifully: how to see the most coastline, reach the best swimming spots and enjoy maximum time in the water without the commitment, cost or complexity of a larger yacht. They are fast enough to cover 50 or more kilometres of coast in a day, nimble enough to nose into shallow bays that would ground a catamaran, and open enough that the whole experience feels immediate and immersive.
In Sardinia, this matters because many of the island's most spectacular places are tucked into small, shallow or hard-to-reach stretches of coastline. The famous pink beach near Budelli, the hidden coves of Spargi, the crystal pools south of Villasimius — these are places where a RIB is often the ideal vessel, not a compromise.
A RIB in Sardinia is not a budget fallback. It is the boat that gets you closest to the water that makes the island famous.
Who it suits
Day trippers, hotel guests, active travellers and groups who want adventure.
Couples staying in a Costa Smeralda hotel who want a standout coastal day. Families on a villa holiday who want to add a memorable water experience. Friend groups who want to explore La Maddalena quickly and affordably. Active travellers who would rather swim in ten different bays than lounge on one yacht deck all day. All of these are strong RIB audiences.
RIBs also suit guests who are not sure whether a multi-day yacht charter is for them. A day on a RIB is an excellent way to experience Sardinia from the water at lower cost and lower commitment, and many guests come back to us afterward wanting to book a longer charter on a catamaran, motor yacht or sailing yacht.
For guests who care most about onboard comfort, shade, cabin space or the ability to stay overnight, a catamaran or motor yacht will usually be the better fit. But for pure day-trip value and coastal excitement, RIBs are very hard to beat.
RIB vs other yacht types
Different boats for different trip styles.
RIB
Best for speed, shallow-water access, day trips and active coastal exploration. Usually the most affordable and spontaneous option.
Motor yacht
Best for style, comfort and fast movement between stops. Stronger for guests who want more living space and an elegant onboard feel.
Catamaran
Best for space, stability and multi-day cruising. Ideal for families and groups who want a floating base rather than a fast coastal run.
Sailing yacht
Best for classic sailing feel and a traditional Mediterranean rhythm. Suits guests who value wind and tradition alongside the scenery.
With or without skipper
A skippered RIB is often the smartest choice.
A skippered RIB rental gives you the freedom of the boat with the benefit of a captain who knows the coast. They handle the navigation, know where the best stops are at any given time of day and wind direction, and manage the boat so everyone on board is simply enjoying the trip. For guests without a boating licence, it also removes any legal complication.
Self-drive RIBs are available for appropriately licensed guests who want full independence. This works well for experienced boaters who know the area or want the adventure of charting their own course. But for first-time visitors, families and groups who want a hassle-free experience, a skippered charter is usually the stronger recommendation.
Best areas
Where RIBs feel especially rewarding.
The La Maddalena archipelago is perhaps the single best RIB destination in Sardinia. The islands sit close together, the water is impossibly clear, the bays are perfectly sized for RIB exploration, and the whole area rewards the kind of spontaneous, stop-and-swim cruising that rigid inflatables are designed for.
Along the Costa Smeralda coast, RIBs are popular for half-day and full-day trips from Porto Cervo, Cannigione and Poltu Quatu. The combination of glamorous coves, beach clubs and short distances makes this coast ideal for fast, scenic RIB outings.
In South Sardinia, RIBs offer access to some of the island's least crowded and most visually striking coastline — especially around Villasimius, Chia and the Sulcis coast.
Best day trips
A few hours on a RIB can be the highlight of a Sardinia trip.
Half-day trip
A focused morning or afternoon exploring three to five beautiful stops near your departure point. Ideal for hotel guests, villa visitors and families who want a concentrated but memorable coastal experience without a full commitment.
Full-day trip
The sweet spot. A full day gives you time to cover a wider stretch of coast, stop for swimming and snorkelling in multiple bays, enjoy a beach lunch, and build in enough flexibility to change plans if you discover somewhere unexpected.
Sunset trip
A shorter late-afternoon charter built around golden light, calmer water and the beauty of watching the Sardinian coast change colour. Often excellent for couples and smaller groups looking for something a little more atmospheric.

Prices
What does a RIB rental cost in Sardinia?
RIB rentals are generally among the most affordable charter options in Sardinia. Pricing depends on the size of the boat, engine power, season, whether a skipper is included, and the duration of the rental. Half-day rentals are available and represent excellent value for guests who want a focused coastal experience.
As a general guide, smaller RIBs without a skipper sit at the lowest price point, while larger skippered RIBs with more powerful engines cost more but offer a significantly better experience in terms of speed, range and comfort. Peak summer months command higher prices than June or September, when conditions are often just as good.
Self-drive
The most affordable option. Best for licensed boaters who want independence and are comfortable navigating the coast on their own.
Skippered
A modest premium over self-drive, but usually the better choice for most guests. Local knowledge alone often justifies the difference.
Premium RIB
Larger, more powerful boats with better comfort, range and sometimes on-board amenities. Excellent for groups who want speed and quality.
Best time
When to rent a RIB in Sardinia.
RIBs are available throughout the Sardinia charter season, roughly from May through to early October. The best conditions are typically between June and September, when the sea is warmest, the weather is most settled and the water visibility is at its peak. July and August offer the longest days and the warmest water, but also the highest demand.
For a calmer, better-value experience, June and September are hard to beat. The water is still inviting, the coast is less crowded, and the overall feel of the trip tends to be more relaxed. Our best time to charter guide covers the month-by-month trade-offs in more detail.
