Yacht Charter Alghero
Sardinia's other coast. Catalan architecture, limestone cliffs, Neptune's Grotto and a cruising character that feels nothing like the east. Alghero is for guests who want to see the island from a completely different angle.
A different Sardinia
Most Sardinia charters head east. The west coast is the reason to come back.
The overwhelming majority of yacht charters in Sardinia depart from the north-east coast. Costa Smeralda, La Maddalena, Olbia — these are the established names. And they are beautiful. But Sardinia has a western coastline too, and it is one of the most underrated charter destinations in the Mediterranean.
Alghero sits at the heart of it. The town itself is a former Catalan colony with a walled old quarter, cobbled streets, and a waterfront that faces west toward open sunset views. The coast north and south of Alghero is defined by towering limestone cliffs, sea caves, dramatic headlands and a sense of wild geology that the east coast — with its rounded granite and sheltered bays — simply does not offer.
Capo Caccia
A vertical cliff promontory that drops hundreds of metres into the sea. Neptune's Grotto sits at its base — accessible by boat in calm weather and one of the most atmospheric arrivals on any Mediterranean charter.
Coral Riviera
Named for the red coral historically harvested here. The coast between Alghero and Bosa is a sequence of cliffs, coves and deserted beaches that most tourists never see because you can only reach them by water.
Stintino & Asinara
Reachable on a longer day charter or multi-day route. La Pelosa beach at Stintino and the wild island of Asinara (a former prison colony, now a national park) are extraordinary stops.
What to know before chartering from Alghero.
The west coast is more weather-dependent than the east. The prevailing mistral wind comes from the north-west, which means this coast is more exposed. In calm settled weather, the sailing is spectacular. In unsettled conditions, a good skipper will adjust the route to find shelter or shift to protected southern anchorages. This is one reason a skippered charter is strongly recommended for west coast cruising.
The fleet in Alghero is smaller than in Olbia or Porto Cervo, but it includes quality vessels suited to the conditions. Sailing yachts are the most natural choice for this coastline. Motor yachts and RIBs work well for day charters when weather is cooperative.
The best months are June, July, early September and calm periods in August. The light on the west coast in the evening hours is exceptional — the sunsets from a yacht off Alghero are among the most photogenic moments in Sardinia.
Two-coast trip
Combine east and west for the complete Sardinia.
Some guests fly into Olbia, charter the east coast, then rent a car to Alghero for a second west coast charter before flying home. It creates a trip that covers two radically different sides of the same island. Ask us about combined routing.

FAQ
Alghero yacht charter — common questions
Is Alghero worth visiting by yacht?
Absolutely. The coastline around Alghero is among the most dramatic in Sardinia — towering cliffs, sea caves, and the famous Neptune's Grotto. It offers a completely different experience from the east coast charter routes.
How is the west coast different from Costa Smeralda?
The east coast is known for sheltered bays, granite coves and luxury marinas. The west coast around Alghero is more dramatic and exposed — limestone cliffs, deeper water, bigger scenery and a more exploratory feel. Less glamour, more adventure.
Can I visit Neptune's Grotto by yacht?
Yes. The sea entrance to Neptune's Grotto at Capo Caccia is accessible by boat in calm conditions. It is one of the highlights of a west coast charter day and far more atmospheric than arriving by road.
Is Alghero good for a first charter?
With a skipper, yes. The waters can be more exposed than the sheltered east coast, so local knowledge and experience matter. A skippered charter removes that concern entirely and lets you focus on the scenery.
How do I get to Alghero?
Alghero-Fertilia Airport (AHO) is just 10 minutes from the town centre. It receives direct flights from several European cities, especially in summer. Alternatively, you can fly to Olbia and drive across the island in about two hours.
